Octopuses have attracted increasing scientific interest due to their unusual anatomy and impressive behavioural abilities. Unlike most other animals, they possess a highly decentralised nervous system, with a significant proportion of their neurons located in their arms rather than in the brain. Researchers believe that this arrangement enables octopuses to perform complex movements efficiently, although the precise relationship between arm activity and decision-making remains under investigation.
Numerous experiments have demonstrated that octopuses are capable of solving problems. In laboratory settings, they have been observed opening containers, navigating mazes and manipulating objects in order to obtain food rewards. Some individuals appear to improve their performance through repeated exposure to similar tasks, suggesting a capacity for learning. However, scientists disagree about whether such behaviour should be regarded as evidence of advanced intelligence or simply the result of trial-and-error processes.
Octopuses are perhaps best known for their remarkable camouflage abilities. Specialised skin cells allow them to rapidly alter both colour and texture, helping them blend into their surroundings or deter potential predators. Although many species possess this ability, the extent to which camouflage is used for communication between octopuses is still uncertain.
Tool use, once thought to be restricted mainly to humans and a few vertebrate species, has also been documented in octopuses. Researchers have reported cases in which octopuses collected discarded coconut shells and transported them across the seabed before assembling them into temporary shelters. Scientists suggest that carrying such objects may involve considerable energetic costs, but they may nevertheless provide protection in environments with limited hiding places.
Despite these discoveries, much remains unknown about octopus behaviour in natural habitats. Most studies have been conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, and comparatively little information is available about social interactions among wild octopuses. In addition, the impact of ocean warming on octopus populations has not yet been fully assessed.
