CROWS: THE UNEXPECTED GENIUSES OF THE BIRD WORLD
Crows belong to the corvid family, a group of birds that also includes ravens, magpies and jays. Although birds were once thought to possess relatively simple cognitive abilities, research conducted over the past few decades has challenged this assumption. In particular, crows have demonstrated behaviours that many scientists associate with advanced intelligence.
One of the most widely studied examples of crow behaviour is tool use. In several experiments, crows have bent wires into hooks, selected sticks of appropriate lengths and even combined separate objects to obtain food that would otherwise be inaccessible. Some researchers suggest that these actions indicate an ability to anticipate future outcomes, while others argue that repeated trial and error may explain at least part of their success.
Studies have also shown that crows possess impressive memories. In one long-term investigation, wild crows appeared capable of recognising individual human faces years after previous encounters. Birds that had experienced threatening interactions with certain people often responded by producing alarm calls when those individuals reappeared. Scientists believe that such memories may help crows avoid potential dangers in their environment.
Young crows are thought to acquire many skills through observation. Researchers have noticed that inexperienced birds sometimes watch older individuals before attempting unfamiliar tasks themselves. Nevertheless, the extent to which knowledge is deliberately taught among crows remains uncertain. Some scientists believe that learning occurs mainly through imitation, whereas others suggest that more complex forms of social learning may exist.
Despite growing interest in crow intelligence, many questions remain unanswered. Most experimental studies have focused on a limited number of species, and relatively little is known about cognitive differences among crows living in different habitats. Furthermore, scientists have not yet determined whether environmental changes caused by urbanisation will influence the problem-solving abilities of future generations.
