MULTITASKING: CAN PEOPLE REALLY DO SEVERAL THINGS AT ONCE?

Person using a smartphone, laptop, and headphones simultaneously, illustrating multitasking, task switching, and divided attention.

In modern society, multitasking is often regarded as a valuable skill. People frequently respond to messages while attending meetings, listen to podcasts while exercising, or check social media while studying. Many individuals believe that performing several activities simultaneously enables them to use their time more efficiently. However, psychologists have increasingly questioned whether people are truly capable of carrying out multiple demanding tasks at the same time.
Researchers generally distinguish between multitasking and task switching. True multitasking involves performing two or more activities simultaneously, whereas task switching refers to moving attention rapidly from one task to another. Scientists suggest that what many people describe as multitasking is, in reality, frequent task switching. Although these shifts in attention may occur within fractions of a second, they can still reduce overall efficiency.
Several experiments have shown that task switching imposes cognitive costs. Individuals often require additional time to refocus on a new activity, and errors may become more common when people attempt to manage multiple complex tasks. Working memory, which temporarily stores and processes information, is believed to play an important role in this process. However, researchers have not yet fully explained why some individuals appear better able to cope with task switching than others.
Digital technology has increased opportunities for multitasking. Notifications from smartphones and computers may interrupt ongoing activities, making sustained concentration more difficult. Some studies have reported a relationship between frequent media multitasking and reduced attention spans. Nevertheless, scientists caution that these findings do not necessarily demonstrate a direct causal relationship, and additional research is required.
Age differences in multitasking ability have also attracted scientific interest. Younger adults sometimes perform better on laboratory tests involving rapid task switching, but experts emphasise that experience, motivation, and familiarity with technology may influence performance. Consequently, researchers remain uncertain about the extent to which age alone determines multitasking ability.
Despite decades of investigation, many aspects of multitasking remain poorly understood. Scientists continue to debate whether training programmes can significantly improve people's capacity to handle several demanding activities simultaneously.

Questions 1–12
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the passage?
Write
TRUE if the statement agrees with the information
FALSE if the statement contradicts the information
NOT GIVEN if there is no information about this.
1. Psychologists generally agree that people can easily perform several difficult tasks at exactly the same time.

2. Task switching involves changing attention from one activity to another.

3. Scientists believe that many people incorrectly describe task switching as multitasking.

4. Changing from one task to another can improve efficiency.

5. People are more likely to make mistakes when attempting several complicated tasks.

6. Researchers completely understand why certain individuals manage task switching more effectively.

7. Notifications from electronic devices may disrupt concentration.

8. Scientists have proved that media multitasking directly causes shorter attention spans.

9. Younger adults always outperform older adults in multitasking experiments.

10. Experience and motivation may influence multitasking performance.

11. Researchers know that age is the most important factor affecting multitasking ability.

12. Scientists are still discussing whether training can improve multitasking skills.

Summary

This passage examines the concept of multitasking and the growing scientific debate surrounding its effectiveness. It distinguishes between true multitasking, where multiple activities are performed simultaneously, and task switching, where attention rapidly shifts between tasks. Research suggests that frequent task switching can reduce efficiency and increase errors due to cognitive costs and limitations in working memory. The passage also discusses the influence of digital technology, including smartphone notifications, on concentration and attention. Additionally, it explores age-related differences in multitasking performance and highlights the ongoing uncertainty regarding the roles of experience, motivation, and training in improving multitasking abilities. Despite extensive research, many aspects of multitasking remain unresolved.
