ÖTZI THE ICEMAN: A FROZEN WINDOW INTO PREHISTORY

Ötzi the Iceman preserved in ice, displayed alongside his copper axe, clothing, bow, arrows, and archaeologists using CT scans and DNA analysis to study the prehistoric mummy.

In 1991, two hikers discovered the naturally preserved body of a man emerging from melting ice in the Ötztal Alps on the border between present-day Italy and Austria. Initially believed to be a recent mountaineering victim, the body was later identified as more than 5,000 years old, making it one of the oldest naturally preserved human remains ever discovered in Europe. Researchers named him Ötzi, after the mountain range where he was found.
The exceptional preservation of Ötzi resulted from a unique combination of environmental conditions. Soon after his death, his body became trapped beneath snow and ice, slowing decomposition and protecting clothing, equipment and biological tissues. As a result, archaeologists recovered an unusually complete collection of artefacts, including a copper axe, a bow, unfinished arrows, clothing made from animal hides and a variety of tools.
Scientific analysis has transformed understanding of Ötzi's final days. CT scans revealed an arrowhead embedded in his left shoulder, while microscopic examination identified signs of internal injuries and previous illnesses. DNA analysis has provided information about his ancestry, physical characteristics and certain inherited health conditions. Nevertheless, scientists continue to debate the precise sequence of events leading to his death, as several interpretations remain consistent with the available evidence.
Chemical examination of Ötzi's stomach contents showed that he had eaten shortly before his death. Researchers also identified pollen grains, enabling scientists to estimate the season during which he died and to reconstruct aspects of his final journey through the mountains. However, archaeologists caution that some conclusions remain provisional because environmental processes may have altered certain forms of evidence over thousands of years.
The discovery of Ötzi has influenced research far beyond archaeology. Studies of his clothing, equipment and preserved tissues have provided valuable insights into prehistoric technology, diet, medicine and daily life. Modern analytical techniques continue to reveal new information, demonstrating that even well-studied archaeological discoveries may produce unexpected scientific findings.
Today, Ötzi remains one of the most intensively researched archaeological discoveries in the world. Each new investigation contributes another piece to the story of a man whose frozen remains continue to reshape understanding of prehistoric Europe.
